Montessori Middle Primary is a natural progression from the Junior Primary, where the foundations are allowed to flourish and grow. In this classroom there is still a lot of movement and work in small groups. The Teacher usually works with one child or with a small group and can be seen walking around the classroom monitoring activities. Children can be involved in number work, reading, writing or computer lessons. They may be sitting at tables or working on floor mats, working alone, in pairs or in collaborative groups. Children at this stage undertake research and project work, gaining an understanding of cooperative and collaborative learning.

Children change dramatically at around 6 years of age and the Montessori environment changes to meet their needs. They become intellectual in nature and begin to move from concrete to abstract reasoning. They develop morality and imagination based on the reality they know, acquiring knowledge and information effortlessly due to their innate passion for learning. They learn through discovery and creative problem solving. It is through a child’s own exploration, imagination and creativity that knowledge and concepts are understood and mastered. Children must be allowed to grow at a developmentally appropriate rate. The Montessori teacher and Montessori materials facilitate their learning. This builds a strong foundation to equip them for lifelong learning.
