Margaret River Montessori Launches High School in Metricup

You may have noticed new signage and construction on Harmans Mills Road in Metricup recently.

This exciting development marks the opening of Margaret River Montessori School’s new high school campus, bringing a cutting-edge approach to secondary education for students in Years 7 to 12.

Rooted in Dr. Maria Montessori’s Erdkinder philosophy, first developed in 1939 and now validated by modern neuroscience, this approach is based on objective proof of how humans learn best. The high school offers a rigorous yet flexible curriculum designed to prepare students for life beyond the classroom. The term Erdkinder, meaning "children of the earth," reflects Montessori’s vision for adolescent education, where students learn through real-world experiences, practical work, and community engagement. Learning is hands-on, purposeful, and problem-based, fostering independence, resilience, interest exploration and adaptability, all essential skills for success in today’s world.

“This is an incredible opportunity for our community,” says Lisa Fenton, Principal. “We are excited to see our students engage in purposeful work, develop intellectual expertise, and explore their personal gifts. This program is about helping students define their life’s interests, build a strong sense of self, and understand their roles as active, engaged citizens.”

High-Level Academics That Make Sense

At Margaret River Montessori, students don’t just memorise facts for a test—they apply knowledge in meaningful ways. The academic program is designed to make sense because it is applied authentically, ensuring that learning is engaging, relevant, and practical.

Subjects are interconnected rather than isolated, creating a natural flow between all disciplines. A sustainability project, for example, might involve data analysis in mathematics, ecological studies in science, ethical discussions in humanities, and persuasive writing in English. This holistic approach deepens understanding, allowing students to see how knowledge is connected and relevant to real-world issues.

“Our students don’t just sit in a classroom listening,” explains Katherine Shearer, Program Coordinator. “They are actively engaged in meaningful work, solving real problems, and applying their learning in ways that are deeply relevant to their future.”

This structure not only meets but exceeds SCSA WA Curriculum and Assessment Outline standards, allowing students to deepen their learning, apply knowledge in real-world contexts, and progress at a pace that honours their individual interests, strengths, and challenges.

A Future Without Limits with the IBPLC Pathway

As students move through Years 10 to 12, they embark on an educational journey that values inquiry, innovation, and mastery of real-world skills. Margaret River Montessori offers the International Big Picture Learning Credential (IBPLC), a globally recognised, government-endorsed alternative to ATAR.

Instead of relying on high-stakes exams, students create comprehensive portfolios showcasing their academic strengths, real-world experiences, and problem-solving abilities. A student passionate about naturopathy, for example, might conduct scientific research on medicinal plants, apply chemical analysis techniques in a lab, use statistical models to validate findings, and develop a business plan for a sustainable herbal remedy. This interdisciplinary, project-based approach ensures that students not only meet but often exceed traditional curriculum standards.

“The program allows students to experience aspects of adulthood while still being supported by a nurturing, educational environment,” explains Katherine Shearer. “It’s about providing adolescents with a context to develop real agency and make a real impact.”

IBPLC and University Recognition

The International Big Picture Learning Credential (IBPLC) is rapidly gaining recognition as a legitimate pathway to higher education, with 17 Australian universities now offering direct entry, including prestigious institutions such as the University of Melbourne and the University of Technology Sydney. In Western Australia, Murdoch University has also embraced the IBPLC, acknowledging its rigorous, real-world approach to learning.

“With 42% of university enrolments in 2023 coming from alternative pathways,” (Australian Broadcasting Corporation, 2024), Shearer notes, “it’s clear that universities are shifting toward skills-based admissions, valuing practical experience, critical thinking, and applied knowledge. As this trend grows, we expect more institutions to follow Murdoch’s lead, opening doors for students who thrive beyond standardised testing.”

The IBPLC is one of four pathways ot university entry on offer at Margaret River Montessori which will also offer exploration of university entry pathways via TAFE, the TISC STAT test (we have an MOU with TISC to allow students to apply for this test in Year 12) and university enabling courses like UniReady.

Pathways Beyond University

While the IBPLC provides direct university entry, Margaret River Montessori also supports students who choose alternative career pathways. The program is designed to develop entrepreneurial thinking, industry connections, and vocational skills, ensuring that students can seamlessly transition into apprenticeships, TAFE programs, work placements, or independent business ventures.

With a strong emphasis on self-directed learning, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills, graduates are equipped with real-world experience, professional confidence, and a clear sense of direction for their future.
